MORROW, Ga. | Host Clayton State netted a golden goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime to hand the No. 2-ranked University of North Georgia women's soccer team a 2-1 Peach Belt Conference loss on Wednesday night at CSU's Laker Field.
The loss is the first of the year for North Georgia as the Nighthawks fall to 9-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference action. Clayton State improves to 8-5, 4-3 PBC.
Clayton's Maria Marti Bartis scored her league-leading 10
th goal of the season in the 39
th minute to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The score would remain the same for the next 50 minutes until UNG's
Jacy Ramey found the equalizer with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
The junior forward headed home a corner from
Mollie Arrendale to force extra time. The score was her team-best ninth of the season.
Clayton would complete the upset when Rachael Schmidt sent an arching shot over UNG keeper
Mallory Sayre's head with just 26 seconds left in the first overtime.
NOTES- The assist was Arrendale's second of the season and first since the team's 3-0 win over Queens on Sept. 13.
- Ramey has scored five goals in her last three games and currently ranks third in the league in scoring.
