EVANS, Georgia | The No. 16 University of North Georgia women's soccer team allowed a goal in the 12th minute of the 2014 Peach Belt Championship Game and despite outshooting No. 5 Columbus State 11-6 in the second half, could never find an equalizer, falling 1-0. The Nighthawks slip to 16-4-1 with the loss and now wait to learn their NCAA Division II Tournament fate on the Tournament Selection Show tomorrow at 7 p.m., on NCAA.com.
North Georgia had the first good look at a scoring opportunity to open the game, but Sydney Reeder's shot hit the crossbar. Columbus State responded with a long run from Corcione, who took a pass from Ashley Miller and pushed it past UNG goalkeeper Mallory Sayre. The ball ricocheted off the left post into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
North Georgia came back in the second half and outshot Columbus State 11-6, three of those shots on goal. Mollie Arrendale hit the crossbar with a shot in the 52nd minute followed by a Rachel VanHorn shot that also hit the crossbar at 60:45. Maylyn Parsons made three saves in the second half including a clutch effort on a Sophia Matonak shot in the 77th minute. For Parsons, the shutout was her 10th of the season.
The game featured two of the Peach Belt's top goalkeepers in CSU's Maylyn Parsons and UNG's Mallory Sayre; each collected six saves on the night. Sayre moves to 16-4-1 on goal for the Nighthawks this season.
Freshman VanHorn and Sophia Matonak led North Georgia on the attack with five shots each, while both players put two shots on frame.
Cicely Taliaferro joined Sayre and VanHorn on the PBC All-Tournament team.
The PBC Championship appearance was the second for the UNG women's soccer program and first since the 2010 season.
