HICKORY, North Carolina | The University of North Georgia women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Belmont Abbey at Lenoir-Rhyne's Moretz Sports Athletic Complex. No. 14 North Georgia will now face the host the second-seeded and 20
th-ranked Bears of L-R on Sunday (Nov. 16) at 1:00 p.m., with a trip to the final 16 on the line.
Rachel VanHorn opened the scoring in the 13
th minute when she took a well-placed through ball from
Cicely Taliaferro and knocked home the match's first tally off the left post marking her 13
th goal of the year.
Belmont Abbey found the equalizer with seven minutes remaining in the first half when Meghan Philp benefitted from a bad clearance from the UNG back line and beat Nighthawk keeper
Mallory Sayre to the top left corner.
The Nighthawks needed just four minutes after halftime to jump back in front when
Jacy Ramey used a cross from
Mollie Arrendale to score right in front of the goal-mouth past BAC keeper Hannah Kohls. Â Â The tally was Ramey's seventh of the season.
Taliaferro gave the Nighthawks more breathing room in the 77
th minute when she used her left foot to clean up a loose ball following a corner kick from
Megan Morrow.
The senior midfielder capped the match's scoring with just over a minute left with her second score on a one-touch following pass to the center of the field from Arrendale. The goals were her team-best 17
th and 18
th of the season.Â
Sayre finished with a single save as the Crusaders were able to put just two shots on frame. North Georgia outshot BAC, 31-3.
North Georgia (17-4-1) moves to a perfect 17-0 when scoring the match's first goal. The Nighthawks have now also advanced to the second round in each of the past three NCAA Tournament appearances.Â
