Taliaferro Leads North Georgia To NCAA Second Round With 4-1 Win Over Belmont Abbey

HICKORY, North Carolina | The University of North Georgia women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Belmont Abbey at Lenoir-Rhyne's Moretz Sports Athletic Complex. No. 14 North Georgia will now face the host the second-seeded and 20th-ranked Bears of L-R on Sunday (Nov. 16) at 1:00 p.m., with a trip to the final 16 on the line.

Rachel VanHorn opened the scoring in the 13th minute when she took a well-placed through ball from Cicely Taliaferro and knocked home the match's first tally off the left post marking her 13th goal of the year.

Belmont Abbey found the equalizer with seven minutes remaining in the first half when Meghan Philp benefitted from a bad clearance from the UNG back line and beat Nighthawk keeper Mallory Sayre to the top left corner.

The Nighthawks needed just four minutes after halftime to jump back in front when Jacy Ramey used a cross from Mollie Arrendale to score right in front of the goal-mouth past BAC keeper Hannah Kohls.   The tally was Ramey's seventh of the season.

Taliaferro gave the Nighthawks more breathing room in the 77th minute when she used her left foot to clean up a loose ball following a corner kick from Megan Morrow.

The senior midfielder capped the match's scoring with just over a minute left with her second score on a one-touch following pass to the center of the field from Arrendale.  The goals were her team-best 17th and 18th of the season.

Sayre finished with a single save as the Crusaders were able to put just two shots on frame.  North Georgia outshot BAC, 31-3.

North Georgia (17-4-1) moves to a perfect 17-0 when scoring the match's first goal.  The Nighthawks have now also advanced to the second round in each of the past three NCAA Tournament appearances.
