SALISBURY, N.C. – The No. 15 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team saw its season come to an end Monday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to No. 18 Wingate in NCAA Tournament action at the Johnson Tennis Center.
Wingate claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, while the Nighthawks' tandem of
Janos Varga and
Pedro Liborio earned a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The Bulldogs quickly built momentum in singles play, taking a 2-0 lead after Emil Remsted defeated
Marcos Castellanos 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Wingate extended the advantage to 3-0 when Carlo Rosellini topped
Pedro Liborio 6-3, 6-4 at the top flight.
North Georgia responded with three straight singles victories to even the match at 3-3.
Franco Rebora put the Nighthawks on the board first with a marathon win at No. 5 singles over Martino Colabella, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(8-6).
Ben Brandl followed with a four-set victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Riku Ogasawara 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Joao Luis Silva completed the comeback with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles.
North Georgia's season came down to No. 6 singles, where
Lleyton Beasley battled back after taking the opening set before falling to Wingate's Jashan Joachim 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the match-clinching point for the Bulldogs.
The Nighthawks close the 2026 campaign with a 13-9 overall record and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the sixth straight season.
