AMERICUS, Ga. - AJ White poured in 21 points as the University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball team earned a 66-62 Peach Belt Conference road victory over Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday night.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring with a quick layup, but North Georgia controlled the remainder of the first half. The Nighthawks used a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from White, to build a 17-7 lead with 13:42 remaining.
North Georgia led by as many as 13 midway through the period and maintained control down the stretch, heading into halftime with a 31-25 advantage following a jump shot by Colin Turner.
Georgia Southwestern briefly took the lead at 35-34 with 16:26 left in the second half, but Stephen Akwiwu answered with a layup to regain the lead, and White followed with a jumper to put the Nighthawks back in front for good.
North Georgia pushed its lead to nine with 2:09 remaining after a three-point play by Chase Champion. The Hurricanes outscored the Nighthawks in the second half, but North Georgia held on to secure the four-point win.
White added four rebounds for North Georgia (15-6, 9-6 PBC). JR Jacobs led Georgia Southwestern (15-8, 8-7 PBC) with 22 points.
North Georgia returns to action Saturday, Feb. 14, hosting Middle Georgia at Lynn Cottrell Arena inside the UNG Convocation Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
