CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The No. 16 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's golf team finished in 6th place out of 16 teams at the NCAA DII South Regional Preview at Cleveland Country Club Tuesday afternoon.
No. 3 Wingate won the event with a 13-over par score. No. 5 Lynn finished in second place at 28-over followed by No. 21 Lander (37-over), No. 13 Lee (39-over) and No. 2 Anderson (40-over) ahead of the Nighthawks.
UNG opened the season with a combined team score of 41-over after shooting 13-over and 7-over on Monday followed by 21-over in the final round Tuesday.
Junior
Abby Franks led her teammates atop the leaderboard this week. With rounds of 75 and 70 on Monday followed by a final-round 77 at 5-over par, the Roebuck, S.C. native finished in seventh place among the 93-player leaderboard, marking the eighth top-10 finish of her career.
Fellow junior
Camryn Wright finished in the top 20 on Tuesday. With a pair of 74s on Monday, Wright strung together a third consecutive solid round as she closed the event with a 5-over 77. She earned a 17th-place finish with the performance.
No scoring Nighthawk had a better final day than sophomore
Ellie Jane Riner. The reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year shot a 4-over 76 at the 6,036-yard, par-72 Cleveland Country Club in the finale. She finished the tournament 13-over par and in 30th place.
Freshman
Mackenzie Connell made a strong appearance in the first collegiate event of her career. Participating as an individual this week, Connell closed her debut tournament at 16-over and in 42nd place individually. She tied Riner for the best final round among the UNG golfers with a 76 on Tuesday.
Senior
Cora Mount and freshman
Claire Bradford rounded out UNG's participation in the event as both players landed in a tie for 50th place. Bradford closed her first collegiate tournament with a final-round 79 Tuesday while Mount finished with an 82.
Freshman
Leigh Allen also made her debut this week as an individual. The rookie recorded her first college round in the 70s after tallying her first career birdie on her final hole Tuesday to finish with a 77.
Now UNG will return home and prepare for the DBU Classic which takes place next Monday, Sept. 22 and ends the following day.
