CHATTANOOGA – The No. 8 University of North Georgia women's tennis team cruised to an easy 4-0 victory over Drury Monday at the Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase.
The match ended 4-0 after both teams agreed to stop play once either school had clinched the match. With a pair of wins in the doubles portion, followed by wins in the #1 singles, #2 singles and #6 singles, UNG earned the victory over the Panthers.
In the #3 doubles, senior Valentina Ascarrunz and junior Carolina Reis cruised to 6-1 win. Over in the #2 doubles match, junior Angelina Linnikova and senior Svetlana Teterina also had no trouble getting past the Panthers for a 6-2 win, securing the lone point for the Nighthawks.
In the #1 and #2 singles matches, both Linnikova and UNG senior Viktorie Wojcikova breezed by the competition. Each won their match 6-3, 6-2, forcing Drury's hand as the Nighthawks only needed one more singles win to pull out the victory.
That win came from Ascarrunz as she took down Panther freshman Eliana Weichel 6-0, 6-1.
The win marks Ascarrunz's 17th of the season and eighth singles win as she's a perfect 23-0 in all sets played this spring.
To solidify the victory even more, when play was stopped, Teterina and senior teammate Johanna Lippert both held match points in their respective matches.
Now UNG will prepare for Catawba as the two teams will face off at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 11 a.m.
