DAHLONEGA – A pair of victories for the top-ranked University of North Georgia softball team highlighted the opening day of the Captain D's Surf & Turf Classic on Friday at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park on Friday.
In the team's home debut, the Nighthawks improve to 6-0 overall courtesy of a 6-1 win over Catawba and a 5-1 win over West Georgia.
No. 1 North Georgia 6, Catawba 1
After giving up a single run on two hits in the first,
Kristen Davis was a force in the circle tossing six innings of no hit softball only allowing one more baserunner after the first. The win was her third of the season.
The Nighthawks equalized in the bottom half of the first when
Mariah Wicker crossed the plate on a
Georgia Blair single.
North Georgia scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings before tacking on the sixth and final run in the sixth on a Blair home run.
Blair and
Sophie Mooney each posted 2-for-4 outings from the plate as both collected two RBIs apiece.
Gracie Mixson and
Katie Ward also pitched in offensively with multiple hit games.
No. 1 North Georgia 5, West Georgia 1
North Georgia plated four runs in the top of the first on just one hit courtesy of three walks and a pair of hit-by-pitches.
UWG got one back in the bottom of the second, but North Georgia plated a run in the top of the sixth to bring the game to its final score.
Tybee Denton (3-0) earned the complete game win in the circle allowing just two hits while striking out five Wolves.
Mooney was the lone Nighthawk to record multiple hits as the North Georgia offense was held in check to just five hits.
The four-team event concludes tomorrow (Feb. 10) with four more games at "The Hill." The host Nighthawks will take on Emmanuel at 10:00 a.m. before squaring off with Catawba at 12:00 p.m. Complete coverage of the Captain D's Surf & Turf Classic can be found
