DAHLONEGA – The No. 11 University of North Georgia women's tennis team won 4-3 in comeback fashion over No. 18 Auburn Montgomery Friday afternoon.
A pair of wins in the doubles matches led by a 7-6 win from No. 22 junior Angelina Linnikova and senior Svetlana Teterina helped the Nighthawks to an early advantage in the match.
However, the Warhawks won three of the first four matches to take control of the overall score 3-2 with just two singles matches left to be played.
It would be up to junior Ashley Moinard and senior Valentina Ascarrunz to lead the comeback charge for UNG.
Ascarrunz made quick work of her opponent in graduate student Ane Ibarra, taking Ibarra down 6-4, 6-1.
With the overall match all tied at 3-3, it came down to Moinard to try and close out the Warhawks. Moinard had her back against the wall after losing 6-3 in her first set against sophomore Sofia Neri. Moinard flipped the script with a dominant 6-1 win in the middle set.
She finished Neri off, winning 6-2 in the third set and locking up the win for the Nighthawks in their first ranked match up of the season.
Now UNG looks to continue its hot streak against Lincoln Memorial after starting the season 5-0.
The Nighthawks will square off with LMU Monday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. from the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
