GREENWOOD, S.C - The sixth-ranked University of North Georgia men's basketball team fell short in a 78-60 Peach Belt Conference road loss to at No. 17 Lander on Wednesday.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for North Georgia as Lander now remains the only remaining unbeaten team in league play.
The Nighthawks (13-2, 4-1 Peach Belt) had two players score in double figures, led by Cayden Charles, who had 14 points. Giancarlo Bastianoni added 12 points.
Frank Champion added three points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and a pair of blocks.
After falling behind 27-15, North Georgia went on an 11-0 run with 6:38 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Sutton Smith, to narrow its deficit to 27-26. Lander answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Nighthawks down 33-28 entering halftime.
Lander kept widening its lead after intermission after starting the half on a 24-7 run over the first 10 minutes of the period. Lander led 70-48 before North Georgia went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Case Roach's three, to shrink the deficit to 70-55 with 3:51 to go in the contest.
Inady Legiste led all scorers with a game-high 19 points as Lander improved to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in PBC play.
North Georgia returns to Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center on Saturday (Jan. 20) for a PBC matchup against USC Beaufort. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
