DAHLONEGA – After trailing for the large majority of the game, the No. 17 University of North Georgia men's basketball team used a late second half push to eventually down visiting Voorhees 87-83 in overtime in non-conference action on Friday evening at Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center.
After holding a 4-2 lead less than two minutes into the contest, the Nighthawks would not lead again in regulation and used a
Frank Champion layup with thirty seconds to play to force overtime.
Voorhees (3-8) led by as many as 14 (35-21) in the first and led for almost 37 minutes of regulation.
In overtime, another Champion basket put the Nighthawks up for good with 2:15 remaining.
Champion again led the Nighthawks on 12-of-14 shooting from the floor for 29 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
AJ White added 23 points on a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe, while
Eric Jones rounded out the double figure scorers for UNG with his second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Voorhees was led by 20 points each from Julius Phillips and Tyler Willoughby as the duo combined to connect on 14-of-31 field goal attempts including 6-of-12 (50%) from three.
The win is the Nighthawks' third straight and pushes North Georgia to a 7-1 record. UNG will wrap up the three-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 9 with a 3:30 tipoff against Mount Olive as part of the Ross Morkem Memorial.
