COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 22 University of North Georgia baseball team was swept Saturday by No. 24 Columbus State with the Cougars walking off the series finale in the bottom of the ninth.
GAME ONE - #24 CSU 12, #22 UNG 2 (7 inn.)
The Cougars got things going quickly in the first inning, plating four runs off a RBI double, a RBI single and a wild pitch. North Georgia got two back starting in the second inning on a
Will Hardigree sacrifice fly and in the third with a passed ball.
Columbus State went on to score the final eight runs of the game, scoring three in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles. The Cougars scored one in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh, using a RBI triple and a sacrifice fly to end the game after the run rule was met.
GAME TWO - #24 CSU 9, #22 UNG 8
Columbus State again wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, using a two-run homer in the first to take the early lead. North Georgia plated four in the top of the second to take their first lead of the day off a
Jake Arnold RBI single, a
Crews Taylor RBI double and a
Tim Conway RBI double.
The Cougars tied the game at 4-4 on another two-run homer in the third, but North Georgia retook the lead on a solo homer from
Bill LeRoy and a two-run bomb from
Nik Levensteins in the fifth. After CSU drew closer with a 7-6 lead off a third two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth,
Jake Howard got a RBI single in the seventh to push ahead, 8-6. Columbus State pushed a run across in the eighth before a fourth two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth walked the game off.
NOTES
- Howard and Taylor led the day at the plate. Taylor went 3-for-6 in the twinbill with two runs scored, two RBI and three walks drawn while Howard went 4-for-6 with a run scored and a RBI.
- The Nighthawks left 17 runners on base on the day, 10 in the first game.
