No. 1 Softball Splits Battle of Blood Mountain Doubleheader

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The top-ranked University of North Georgia softball team split a Battle of Blood Mountain showdown with No. 11 Young Harris Saturday with the Mountain Lions winning the final game in nine innings.

GAME ONE - #1 UNG 6, #11 YHC 4
Young Harris was first to the scoreboard, plating two runs off just one hit and three Nighthawk errors in the first inning. North Georgia answered in a big way, plating five in the second on a Mallory Parker RBI single, a three-run blast from Cheyanne Mosteller and a solo homer from Shelby Hammontree.

Kaylyn Anthony got in on the homerun fun in the third with a solo homer. Young Harris got a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to wrap up the scoring.

Kylee Smith earned the win for North Georgia, striking out eight in a complete game effort.

GAME TWO - #11 YHC 10, #1 UNG 9 (9 inn.)
Margaret Simmons and Anthony got things started for the Nighthawks in the first, each hitting two-run homers. The Mountain Lions scored three in the bottom of the first before North Georgia got one back in the second on a YHC error, putting the score at 5-3.

Young Harris took the lead in the third, scoring three runs to take a one run lead, but the Nighthawks tied it up on a Hammontree RBI single in the fourth. Hammontree struck again in the sixth with a solo homer to take a lead, but the Mountain Lions retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth by a 9-7 advantage. After North Georgia tied it up in the seventh on a pair of sacrifice flies, the Mountain Lions pushed a run across in the ninth on an infield single.

NOTES
- Hammontree, Olivia Sinquefield and Anthony all had four hits in the doubleheader.

- As it stands, the Battle of Blood Mountain point is split with any postseason play to factor into the final standings.

North Georgia will take on Auburn Montgomery Tuesday in Dahlonega at 3 p.m.
