DAHLONEGA - The No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team earned a Peach Belt Conference sweep of Lander Tuesday afternoon at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
GAME ONE - #3 UNG 2, LU 1
Kaylyn Anthony got things started for the Nighthawks with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the second. After a RBI double in the fourth tied the game for the Bearcats,
Shelby Hammontree smashed a solo bomb to left field in the fifth to win the game for UNG.
Kylee Smith (10-3) earned the win for North Georgia, striking out 16 Bearcats along the way.
GAME TWO - #3 UNG 6, LU 0
Hammontree scored the game's first run on a wild pitch after reaching base via error in the first inning. North Georgia doubled the lead on a
Mallory Parker RBI triple one inning later that plated
Madi Perry.
The Nighthawks scored three runs in the fifth, using a sacrifice squeeze bunt from Hammontree to get the inning started.
Margaret Simmons scored the final two runs of the inning, bringing them home on a double in the gap in right center. A
Cheyanne Mosteller RBI single in the sixth wrapped up the scoring.
Tybee Denton (6-2) took the win, throwing a one-hitter and striking out four.
NOTES
- Hammontree moves to within one homer of tying the career homer record at UNG. She went 2-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI.
- North Georgia has now won 32 straight games against Lander in the all-time series after falling in the first game played between the two teams.
- April 28's home doubleheader versus Union has been postponed.
