NEWBERRY, S.C. - With a win in the first game of the day, University of North Georgia head softball coach
Mike Davenport earned his 900th win of his head coaching career as the No. 1 Nighthawks split a non-conference doubleheader with Newberry Wednesday.
GAME ONE - #1 UNG 12, NBY 1
Newberry was the first on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a bases loaded single, but North Georgia responded in the top of the third with six runs.
Shelby Hammontree gave the Nighthawks the lead with a two-run homer to center before
Madison Simmons homered three batters later to give UNG a 5-1 lead.
After a
Mallory Parker RBI single finished off the third, the Nighthawks pushed single runs across in the fourth and fifth innings to stretch the lead out to 8-1. UNG scored four more in the seventh, plating runs on a bases loaded walk, a
Kaylyn Anthony RBI double and a Parker RBI single.
Kylee Smith (6-0) earned the win, going five innings and striking out eight Wolves.
GAME TWO - NBY 2, #1 UNG 1
The Nighthawks were the first to the scoreboard in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by
Margaret Simmons, plating Hammontree to give the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead.
Newberry scored both of their runs in the sixth inning on a RBI triple and a Nighthawk error. North Georgia hit two balls to the outfield in the seventh, but both were caught as Newberry got the win.
NOTES
- Davenport started his head coaching career in 2001 and has had a winning record in every year as the leader of the North Georgia softball program.
- North Georgia was held to just two hits in the second game of the day.
- The Nighthawks announced two schedule adjustments, rescheduling Lander for April 20 and Shorter for April 21.
