MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team took care of business on opening day, sweeping Montevallo with identical 4-0 wins Sunday on the road.
GAME ONE
The Nighthawks struck first on an unearned run as
Gracie Mixson got her first collegiate RBI on a fielder's choice. Neither team put a run on the board until the fifth inning when UNG got things going with a
Kaylyn Anthony single. After an
Olivia Sinquefield sacrifice bunt,
Shelby Hammontree brought her fellow senior home on a RBI single to double up the North Georgia lead.
UNG doubled their lead again in the sixth as
Margaret Simmons got things started with a single, followed behind by a
Mallory Parker RBI double. Parker would score on a Mixson RBI single that brought the game to its final score.
Kylee Smith (1-0) got the win in six innings of work, fanning nine while giving up just two hits.
GAME TWO
North Georgia wasted no time getting to work in the second half of the twinbill, using singles by Sinquefield and Simmons as well as a Falcon error to get up early, 1-0. Again, it was until the fifth inning before either team scored as the Nighthawks used a RBI double from Anthony to score
Cheyanne Mosteller and put UNG up, 2-0.
The sixth inning again saw a pair of Nighthawks cross the plate after a leadoff walk and another UM error led to an unearned run before
Mariah Wicker brought home Parker to get to the 4-0 final score.
Tybee Denton (1-0) won her first collegiate start, going six innings while striking out five and giving up just four hits.
