DAHLONEGA - The No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team opened the home portion of their 2021 schedule Friday with a doubleheader sweep of West Florida at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park. UNG won game one in 8-0 fashion before a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE - UNG 8, UWF 0 (5 inn.)
North Georgia wasted no time getting on the board, using a
Shelby Hammontree RBI groundout, a
Georgia Blair RBI double and a
Mallory Parker two run bomb to chase the Argonaut starting pitcher after just 0.2 innings of work. Leading 4-0 after the first frame, the Nighthawks got a leadoff homer from
Madison Simmons in the second to extend the lead to 5-0.
The long balls continued in the fourth when
Olivia Sinquefield sent one over the left center wall, plating
Mariah Wicker in the process to get to a 7-0 score line before a
Margaret Simmons RBI double in the fifth ended the game at the run rule limit.
Kylee Smith (2-0) earned the win, fanning eight while giving up just three hits and a walk.
GAME TWO - UNG 5, UWF 4
The Argos got on the board first, earning the first run of the year against UNG with a Kara Wilson solo shot. The Nighthawks answered with a Blair triple that scored
Gracie Mixson and tied the game before Parker doubled to give North Georgia a 2-1 lead.
UWF responded in the very next frame, scoring a run on a Mika Garcia double and two on a Nighthawk error to jump out to a 4-2 advantage. Once again, the Nighthawks fought back, cutting the lead to 4-3 on a
Cheyanne Mosteller double.
Kaylyn Anthony brought Mosteller home on a RBI single before scoring on a Hammontree single, giving the Nighthawks the lead that they were able to hold onto.
Laken Chambers (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 2.2 innings while giving up just one unearned run off three hits.
