Baseball Splits Opening Day Twinbill at Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The University of North Georgia baseball team opened up the 2021 season with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader split against Claflin, winning game one, 14-0, in seven innings before falling in the nightcap, 16-13.

GAME ONE
North Georgia opened up the first game of the season with a six-spot in the first inning as the Nighthawks batted around. Three runs were walked in before Brady Eeles hit a sacrifice fly to left and Crews Taylor knocked a two-RBI single to right to highlight the inning.

Nik Levensteins kept the momentum going in the second inning with a two run homer that extended the lead to 8-0. Neither team found the scoreboard again until UNG strike in the sixth on a Jake Howard double that plated two runs, followed by a RBI double from Taylor. The Panthers then had an error that allowed Taylor to come home before Levensteins homered again in the seventh to bring the game to its final.

Steven Bower (1-0) earned the win, going the distance with nine strikeouts and giving up just four hits and two walks.

GAME TWO
Claflin got on the scoreboard first as Keyon Smith plated a run on a RBI groundout in the bottom half of the first. The Panthers then put up four runs in the third, highlighted by a Smith two-run homer.

North Georgia answered in the fourth, scoring on a Jake Arnold sacrifice fly, but Claflin got the run back on a Steve Joyner RBI single to make it 6-1. Andres Perez put UNG back on the board just one frame later in the fifth with a three-run bomb to cut the lead to two.

After a five-run sixth for Claflin, the Nighthawks stormed back with nine in the seventh. UNG scored on a Levensteins grand slam, a Panther error, a Howard sacrifice fly and a Tim Conway three-run homer that gave North Georgia a 13-11 lead. Again, Claflin responded in the bottom of the inning on a Gerardric Dobbs double that tied the game up at 13-13. The Panthers won the game in the eighth, scoring on a fielder's choice and a Smith double that plated the game's final two runs.

Smith finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBI and two runs scored.

NOTES
- Levensteins went 4-for-9 on the day with nine RBI and four runs scored.

- North Georgia drew 25 walks on the day, 14 in game one and 11 in the nightcap.
