DAHLONEGA - The No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team stretched its perfect start in 2021 to 10-0 as they swept Wingate Sunday at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
GAME ONE - UNG 6, WU 1
North Georgia struck first when they pushed across an unearned run in the third. The bats got hot after that as
Shelby Hammontree and
Cheyanne Mosteller each hit two run homers in the fourth to give UNG a 5-0 lead.
Wingate answered in the top of the fifth on a Raelynn Kramer RBI single up the middle to trim the lead to 5-1, but North Georgia got the run back in the next frame on a RBI single from
Margaret Simmons to reach the final score.
Abbie Crawford (2-0) got the win, going 4.2 innings and allowing just one run.
Tybee Denton came on to close the final 2.1, fanning five of the eight batters she faced.
GAME TWO - UNG 8, WU 0 (5 inn.)
The Nighthawks wasted no time in the second half of the twinbill, plating four runs in the first inning. Two came off a Simmons homer while the other two were plated on a RBI single from Hammontree.
After scoring on a Bulldog error in the third, North Georgia finished off the game in the fifth with a
Madison Simmons solo homer and a walkoff two run blast from Mosteller.
Laken Chambers (3-0) earned the win in a one-hitter, striking out four in the process.
NOTES

Madison Simmons finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the way for the Nighthawks.
- UNG is now on a 14-game winning streak dating back to the conclusion of the 2020 season. It's the third longest winning streak in Division II.
