DAHLONEGA - For the first time since March 10, the University of North Georgia will have student-athletes competing tomorrow when the men's and women's tennis teams take to the courts for the ITA Southeast Regional, hosted by Belmont Abbey, this weekend.
Both tennis teams had their seasons cut short with the women undefeated and No. 10 in the nation and the men at 7-1 and No. 23 in the nation at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those national rankings carry some weight into the regional tournament as there will be five Nighthawks seeded in the singles draws and three doubles teams seeded as well.
On the men's side,
Ryan Gaskin will be the No. 2 seed and will start his pursuit of an ITA Regional singles title at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. On the women's side, the 2018 ITA Southeast Regional singles champion Vaishali Jorge is the No. 4 seed and will begin her tournament at 2 p.m. Thursday. Claudelle Labonte Frey, Rafaella Villanueva and Cibeles Zuddy also earned regional seeds in the singles draw.
In doubles, Gaskin and Kevin Candido Magnusson are the No. 2 doubles duo in the tournament on the men's side. Jorge and Labonte Frey got the No. 2 women's seed, while Zuddy and Villanueva earn the No. 3 doubles seed in the draw.
Also competing for the Nighthawks will be
Tim Kiehl,
Zach Waldow and
Jared Bones. Kiehl and Waldow will be a part of the singles draw, and Bones will partner with Waldow in the doubles draw.
