INDIANAPOLIS – University of North Georgia men's basketball player
Zach Brown was recently appointed to the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). This nationwide, highly-selective committee is comprised of members from every NCAA Division II conference. Brown will represent the Peach Belt Conference for a non-renewable three-year term.
"I'm very excited and proud that Zach was chosen for this role," said
Lindsay Reeves, UNG Director of Athletics. "I look forward to seeing Zach take on this new role and implement his leadership skills as he has always represented UNG with class and integrity, and I know he will do the same for the Peach Belt Conference at the national level."
Brown, a redshirt junior from Princeton, New Jersey, just finished up his first year in a Nighthawk uniform, averaging 8.2 points per contest. He scored in double figures 13 times, including a season-best 20 point outing at Southern Wesleyan. After serving as a member of SAAC at his previous school (Hartford), Brown now serves on UNG's SAAC Executive Board as the Treasurer.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) serves as the primary governance arm representing student-athlete interests in Division II affairs. SAAC members serve as student-athlete liaisons that monitor and discuss happenings on campuses, within conference and at the national level.
Representatives are responsible for gathering feedback and reporting on behalf of their conference, as well as relaying important events, hot topics and educational information to both the campus and conference levels. In addition to relaying information across campuses and conferences, the committee speaks on behalf of the entire Division II student-athlete body throughout the NCAA governance structure.
Division II SAAC members serve as voting members on a number of Division II committees, including the Management Council. The SAAC also has voting authority during the Division II Business Session at the annual NCAA Convention.
The Division II SAAC currently has 28 members, including representatives from each of the 23 Division II multi-sport voting conferences, one representative of Division II independent institutions, two at-large representatives. Additionally, two members of the Management Council and one member of the Presidents Council serve as ex-officio and nonvoting members.
The Division II SAAC Nominating Subcommittee selects national committee members from a diverse pool of candidates that conference offices submit. The Division II Management Council ratifies the appointments, and each student-athlete serves a non-renewable three-year term; however, the student-athlete may serve only up to one year after exhausting his or her eligibility.
