DAHLONEGA - The No. 9 University of North Georgia softball team started off a three-game series with No. 7 Lincoln Memorial Saturday and swept both ends of a twinbill on Cancer Awareness Day.
GAME 1 - UNG 5, LMU 1
Margaret Simmons got the scoring started in the second on a RBI single for North Georgia, plating
Madison Simmons. The Nighthawks doubled their lead in the fourth off a
Cheyanne Mosteller RBI double that scored
Olivia Sinquefield. One inning later, it was
Shelby Hammontree doubling to score
Lexi Duncan, pushing the UNG lead to 3-0.
After a Railsplitter sacrifice fly in the sixth, North Georgia scored two more runs in the bottom half on RBI doubles from
Jenna Goodrich and
Kaylyn Anthony, bringing the game to its final score.
Kylee Smith (10-1) earned the win for the Nighthawks, going five innings and striking out 12.
GAME 2 - UNG 12, LMU 4 (5 inn.)
Mallory Parker reached base for North Georgia to kickstart the offense for UNG in the first inning and came around to score on a RBI groundout. The Railsplitters answered in the third, scoring two runs on a RBI double and another two on a homer to take their first lead of the day at 4-1.
North Georgia answered in the bottom of the third with a four spot of their own, scoring first on a Hammontree RBI single. A
Margaret Simmons sacrifice fly and a Goodrich RBI single scored the final three runs of the inning, retaking a 5-4 lead in the process.
From there, the bats for UNG woke up, scoring seven more in the fourth, highlighted by home runs from Anthony and Hammontree.
NOTES
- Hammontree finished the twinbill 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI. Anthony was 4-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBI.
- The Nighthawks have an eight-game winning streak against LMU.
