DAHLONEGA - Kylee Smith threw a no-hitter in the first game and the Nighthawk offense exploded in both games as the No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team took both halves of the Saturday twinbill against Georgia Southwestern on Cancer Awareness Day.
GAME 1 - UNG 8, GSW 0 (5 inn.)
The Nighthawks put up a run in the first inning as
Hobby Gregory stole third and raced home after a throwing error to put UNG up, 1-0.
North Georgia then pushed across five runs in the third inning off five hits and a Hurricane error.
Kaylyn Anthony scored the first run of the inning on a single from
Kaylee Womack. After scoring on a wild pitch, UNG used a
Shelby Hammontree single to score two more to make the score 5-0. A
Cheyanne Mosteller double scored the inning's final run before the Nighthawks ended the game with a
Harlee Williams double in the fifth that scored two.
Smith (19-1) earned the win, striking out 11 batters along the way.
GAME 2 - UNG 8, GSW 0 (6 inn.)
The Nighthawks loaded the bases in the first inning and they were cleared with a
Marley Stowers triple to put UNG up, 3-0. After getting the fourth run of the game early in the second inning, another triple, this time by
Hobby Gregory, pushed two more across to put North Georgia ahead by six.
Up 7-0 headed into the sixth,
Lexi Duncan doubled and then came home on a wild pitch to score the eighth run of the game, ending the doubleheader in a sweep fashion for the Nighthawks.
Abbie Crawford (9-2) earned the win, going three innings and giving up just one hit and two walks.
NOTES
- Smith has struck out 10 or more batters in a single game eight times this season.
- Stowers led North Georgia at the plate in the doubleheader, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
