ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The No. 11 University of North Georgia women's tennis team fell short to No. 18 Flagler Sunday, losing 5-2 in their penultimate Peach Belt Conference match.
Doubles was a tight affair, and the Nighthawks were unlucky to lose the doubles point.
Cibeles Zuddy and
Lexa Loden lost 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, but doubles was quickly evened up, as
Holly Bennett and
Vaishali Jorge recorded a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot. With the point resting on No. 2 doubles, the pairing of
Emma Etelalahti and
Adrienne Bofinger fell in a tiebreak, losing 7-6.
Needing four wins from the six singles matches, UNG didn't get off to an ideal start, as Jorge lost at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Now 2-0 down, Bofinger got the Nighthawks back on track, crusing to an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win, and handing North Georgia a much needed life line. However, today was not meant to be. Zuddy lost at No. 4 in straight sets, and was followed quickly by Claudelle Labonte Frey, who also bowed out in straights.
The Nighthawks are still an impressive 16-4 on the year, while also dropping to 6-2 in conference play. The final regular season match is Monday where UNG will battle USC Aiken in South Carolina. Play will begin at noon.
