PREVIEW: No. 3 Softball Readies for Back-to-Back PBC Doubleheaders This Weekend

| By:

Game Preview: The No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team looks to get back on the winning track with two Peach Belt doubleheaders this weekend at The Hill.

Rankings: UNG is ranked No. 3 in the latest NFCA top 25 poll, announced Wednesday. Other teams from the southeast region that are ranked are No. 19 Lincoln Memorial and No. 21 Wingate. Carson-Newman is receiving votes in the poll.

Nighthawks on the Web: Links to both doubleheaders can be found above or on the UNG Softball schedule page. Fans can also follow the action through Twitter by following the softball team (@UNGSoftball).

Last Week: The Nighthawks went 2-2 last week, splitting with both Young Harris in league play and Lee in a Tuesday midweek doubleheader.

PBC Team Stats: Kylee Smith (0.55) and Laken Chambers (0.94) are first and second in the PBC in ERA while Smith leads the league in wins with 16. The junior is second in the league in strikeouts with 169. As a team, the Nighthawks have the lowest ERA at 1.29 and have given up the fewest hits and runs in the league. The Nighthawks find themselves in the middle of the league in most of the offensive statistical categories.

Scouting the Opponents: Lander is 17-15 on the year and 2-4 in PBC action. The Bearcats split league doubleheaders with Georgia Southwestern and Columbus State after opening the league calendar with two losses to Flagler. North Georgia is 28-1 against Lander all-time and has won 27 straight in the series. That winning streak is the second-longest against a single opponent in program history, trailing a 28-game winning streak against Francis Marion. Augusta is 3-23 on the season and has yet to find a PBC win headed into a Saturday twinbill at Young Harris. UNG is 29-5 against the Jags all-time and has never lost to Augusta in Dahlonega, winning all 21 matchups at The Hill.

PBC Standings: The Nighthawks currently sit in second place in the league standings, one game back of Flagler, who has played two fewer games.
