CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The No. 1 University of North Georgia softball team split a second straight doubleheader Tuesday, winning the front half before dropping the second part of the twinbill Tuesday to Lee.
GAME 1 - UNG 3, LEE 0
North Georgia scored all three runs in the second inning, starting with a
Lexi Duncan double that plated
Kaylyn Anthony. The Nighthawks scored two more on a
Hobby Gregory single, plating Duncan and
Shelby Hammontree and putting UNG up, 3-0.
From there, both teams struggled to get base runners as
Kylee Smith and Shonna Penney dealt in the circle. Smith earned the win, scattering three hits across seven innings while striking out eight.
GAME 2 - LEE 8, UNG 7
The second half of the twinbill provided a lot more action, starting right in the top of the first when
Kaylee Womack brought home
Hobby Gregory to give UNG a 1-0 lead. Lee scored the next six runs, four of which came in the second and the other two in the fourth.
North Georgia answered and began a comeback starting in the sixth, taking advantage of a Flame error to push two runs across and cut the lead to 6-3. The Nighthawks took advantage of another Lee error in the seventh to score four runs and take the lead before the final Flame was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to end the game after tying the game earlier in the seventh.
NOTES
- Gregory led the Nighthawks in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader.
- North Georgia only drew two walks in the twinbill compared to six for the Flames.
NEXT UP
UNG will be back on the field Saturday against Lander at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.
