DAHLONEGA - Kaylyn Anthony went a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate as the No. 2 University of North Georgia softball team defeated Shorter, 2-0, in both ends of a Wednesday twinbill at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium.
GAME ONE
North Georgia got things started in the fourth inning when
Shelby Hammontree reached base on a Hawk error and came around to score on Anthony's RBI double to give UNG a 1-0 lead.
Shorter gave the Nighthawks a bit of a scare in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but
Kylee Smith got Carson Carriker to ground into a fielder's choice to get out of the jam. UNG responded with another run in the bottom of the frame when Hammontree hit a homer that cleared the right field wall and got the game to its final score.
Smith (8-0) pitched her fifth complete game of the season, striking out 11 Hawks in the process.
GAME TWO
After
Amber Johns sat down Shorter in order in the top of the first, the Nighthawks went on a two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning. Hammontree doubled to left center and came around on an
Alishia Frierson RBI single. Frierson advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Anthony's RBI single to give the Nighthawks their only two runs of the game.
Shorter only got two runners on base, both only reaching first, as Johns (6-0) pitched a one-hitter, fanning six batters along the way.
NOTES
- Anthony's 6-for-6 day included three doubles and two RBI. Hammontree finished 2-for-6 in the doubleheader with three runs scored.
