DAHLONEGA - Julianne Sutton led the No. 14 University of North Georgia women's basketball team overcame early shooting woes to earn a 77-71 win over West Florida in the opening day of the UNG Nighthawk Classic.
The Argos got off to a hot shot from beyond the arc, making three of their first seven shots from distance to hold an early lead before the Nighthawks pushed ahead by four at the end of the first. West Florida battled back in the second frame, cutting the lead to one before the half.
North Georgia's shooting heated up in the second half as the Nighthawks made nearly 50 percent of their shots from the floor to pull away enough to get the third win of the season.
NOTES
- Sutton tallied a game-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Amber Skidgel added 17, while
Vanessa Agrusa and
Tamera Thorpe each scored 16.
- UWF's Toni Brewer notched a double-double of her own, scoring 16 points and 18 boards.
- North Georgia's starting five scored all 77 points.
- Carson-Newman defeated Georgia College, 88-72, in the first game of the classic.
