DAHLONEGA - Asa Thorsen put North Georgia in the lead in the 61st minute, but No. 12 Flagler scored late and in overtime to down the University of North Georgia women's soccer team, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Dahlonega. The Nighthawks slide to 5-3-2 overall and 3-2 in Peach Belt play after the loss.
"Unfortunately, we didn't see the game out today," said head women's soccer coach
Chris Adams. "That's our sixth overtime game and the first one we have dropped. I think our youth really showed today late in the match."
The Saints scored the first goal of the match in the 29th minute as Fio Fustagno put one home off a Charlene Nowotny cross. UNG answered early in the second half when
Renee VanHorn headed home a cross from
Olivia Dumphy in the 53rd minute.
Thorsen fired a shot home in the 61st minute on her second touch after
Michelle Allen passed her the ball at the top of the penalty box to give the Nighthawks a 2-1 lead. Flagler didn't go quietly as Fustagno found the net on a diving header in the 90th minute. Nowotny scored in the upper corner of the frame in the 94th minute to earn the golden goal win.
NOTES
- The win by Flagler was the first against the Nighthawks all-time. UNG leads 9-1-1 in the history of the series.
- The Nighthawks out-shot the Saints, 14-9, in the contest. Both teams put seven shots on frame.
