GULF SHORES, Ala. — The eighth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team split a pair of games against Gulf South Conference opponents on the second day of the Gulf Coast Invitational hosted by Spring Hill College. No. 13 Valdosta State got the better of the Nighthawks in the first game of the day by a score of 7-2, UNG bounced back in their second game with a 5-1 win over West Florida. North Georgia moves to 2-2 on the season following Saturday's games.
GAME ONE
After a fairly quiet first two innings of play, the Blazers broke the game open in the top of the third with a rally that was aided by a defensive miscue by the Nighthawks. A dropped foul ball proved costly as what would've been a two-run inning turned into a five-run frame for Valdosta State.
UNG answered with a
Shelby Hammontree RBI double to left center that scored
Whitney Worth from third. The Blazers would get the run back and add another in the top of the sixth, though extending their lead to six.
Kaylyn Anthony drove in the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle to plate
Stephanie Hartness from second.
Bria Bush (0-2) went the distance for the Nighthawks allowing seven runs, just two of them earned, on ten hits with three walks and a strikeout. For the second straight day, Bush didn't receive much help from her defense as UNG committed three errors in the game that proved costly.
Avery Lamb (1-0) was able to scatter eight Nighthawk hits while allowing just two runs with a walk and four strikeouts.
GAME TWO
For the fourth straight game to open up the season, UNG fell behind early giving up a run to West Florida in the top of the third with a RBI single down the left field line. UNG would battle back though, hanging a four spot in the fourth to take control of the game. Junior
Sydney Sprague sparked the rally with a leadoff double down the right field line,
Alishia Frierson moved her to third with a single up the middle and
Jessica Finch followed with another single up the middle to bring in Sprague and tie the game. Two more runs came in on a Hammontree single to right and the Nighthawks would add a fourth run on a
Kali Turner single to right field to put UNG up, 4-1.
Hartness would draw a bases loaded RBI walk in the sixth to score Worth and give the game its final 5-1 score.
Kylee Smith (2-0) knotted her second straight win allowing just one run on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. UWF's Becca Taylor (2-1) was tagged with her first loss of the 2017 season allowing five runs, all earned, on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
