GULF SHORES, Ala. – The final day of the Gulf Coast Invitational saw the eighth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team record a pair of run-rule victories at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Nighthawks opened with a 10-2 win over Delta State in the morning and capped the weekend with an 8-0 victory over Mississippi College.
GAME ONE
North Georgia struck first in the top of the first inning when
Jessica Finch singled up the middle, scoring
Alishia Frierson. The Nighthawks extended their lead to 3-0 in the third when
Sydney Sprague singled to center field scoring
Stephanie Hartness and
Lexi Duncan, making the score 3-0.
The Statesmen cut the UNG lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a fielding error and a double steal, but the Nighthawks rebounded to add three more runs in the top of the next frame to push their lead back to 6-2.
North Georgia scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to seal the win. Hartness singled up the middle scoring
Lexi Duncan and
Morgan Helton for UNG's seventh and eighth runs. She later scored on a fielder's choice.
Alishia Frierson scored the 10th and final run off a throwing error by the shortstop.
Bria Bush earned the win as she allowed two runs on two hits in four innings of work.
Hartness, Sprague, Frierson,
Jessica Finch and Duncan each recorded multiple-hit games offensively.
GAME TWO
In the final game of the weekend, the Nighthawks jumped out quick with four runs in the bottom of the first fueled by two-RBI hits by Finch and
Hannah McSwain.
After three scoreless innings, UNG ended the game with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Frierson and Kaylin Anthony each plated runs with RBI singles in the fifth, while Hartness ended the game with a two-run walk off homerun an inning later.
Sprague and Finch each recorded two hits to lead the offense, while
Kylee Smith earned her third win of the season, and first career shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out five.

North Georgia (4-2) returns to action Feb. 10-12 when the Nighthawks host the
Steak-n-Shake Classic at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium in Dahlonega. The five-team event features five teams playing 13 teams over three games.
