EVANS, Ga. - Three first-half goals, including two scored within 90 seconds of one another, gave the University of North Georgia a 3-0 upset win over second-seeded No. 12 Young Harris Friday night at Blanchard Woods Park in the Peach Belt Conference semifinals.
The scoring started in the 12th minute when
Michael Akin played a ball through to
Alex Grant, who was able to beat the Mountain Lion keeper to earn a 1-0 lead.
The Nighthawks doubled their lead in the 42nd minute off a Gabriel Garcia corner kick. Garcia played the ball out to
Adam Farrell, and, after dribbling up, fired one to the bottom right of goal. Just seconds later,
Daniel Joyce played a ground ball across the frame to the foot of
Jordan Day to bring the game to its final score.
NOTES
- The win Friday clinches a spot in the PBC finals for the first time in program history. It is the Nighthawks' first win in the semifinals in three tries.
- UNG's defense held YHC to just 12 shots in the match, the Mountain Lions' lowest since October 11 against Limestone.
- The three-goal win over Young Harris is the largest margin of victory for UNG over the rivals from the other side of Blood Mountain in the all-time series. Should the teams not meet again this season, North Georgia will earn a half point in the Battle of Blood Mountain competition.
