DAHLONEGA | The University of North Georgia women's basketball team fell to No. 6 Columbus State for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon, 72-66. The Nighthawks slip to 20-7 overall with a 12-6 record in Peach Belt action.
North Georgia came out fighting in the first half, opening up with a 10-5 lead in the first five minutes of play. Columbus State (26-1, 17-1 PBC) would settle into a rhythm though, going on to take a 33-30 lead into the half.
After the Cougars had extended their lead to as many as 13 points in the second half, UNG surged from behind and pulled within a basket in the final minute.
Stephanie Huffman provided a solid effort on her senior day, leading the Nighthawks with 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds. CSU's Michelle Mitchell led all scorers with 22 points.
The win was Columbus State's 12th straight and snapped a 15-game home winning streak for the Nighthawks in Memorial Hall.
The Nighthawks will wrap up their regular season slate on Wednesday evening, hosting Georgia Southwestern at 5:30 p.m., in Memorial Hall. A North Georgia win or a Clayton State loss will secure a home game for UNG in the PBC Tournament quarterfinals to be held next Saturday, February 28.
