DAHLONEGA | A pair of double-doubles by
Stephanie Huffman and
Kelsey Hutchins was not enough as the University of North Georgia women's basketball team fell in its regular season finale, 77-75, to Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday afternoon in Memorial Hall. The loss is the fourth consecutive for North Georgia as the Nighthawks fall to 20-8 overall and 12-7 in league play.
Despite the loss, UNG claimed the West Division's second seed by virtue of No. 6 Columbus State's overtime win over Clayton State and will now host a Peach Belt Tournament quarterfinal game in Memorial Hall on Saturday, Feb. 28. Complete details including tournament seedings and game times will be released from the conference office later tonight.
Huffman finished the night with 25 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year. She also finishes the regular season as the Peach Belt's leading scorer at 20.4 points per game, edging Columbus State's Michelle Mitchell (20.1 ppg) by less than a half of a point per game.
Hutchins also notched her sixth double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Lauren Pounds and
Samantha Glodis added 10 and nine respectively for UNG.
GSW's Shanedra Lockett and Tiara Thompson scored 25 points each as the duo combined to connect on 21-of-38 shots from the field. GSW finishes the season at 14-12, 8-11 PBC.
The Hurricanes led by three (34-31) at the break and extended their lead to a game-high seven points, 66-69, with 5:12 remaining in the game.
Trailing by seven with just over three minutes remaining, North Georgia used an 8-1 run to even the score at 75 apiece with 1:12 left, but a layup by GSW's Yavonna Dunkley with 15 ticks was the difference.
The Nighthawks were plagued by 22 turnovers and could only make good on two of the team's six attempts from behind the 3-point line.
