DAHLONEGA | Behind a pair of stellar pitching outings, the University of North Georgia baseball team shut down Indianapolis and swept a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium. The Nighthawks won 2-1 in the opener before blanking the Greyhounds, 6-0, in the rubber game.
The series win is the second of the season for North Georgia and comes against a team that is on the heels of a 30-win season and NCAA appearance in 2014.
"We were able to hold off a heck of a ball club today in Indianapolis," stated Nighthawk skipper
Tom Cantrell. "I was extremely proud of how our team responded from yesterday's loss and look forward to using today's momentum to propel us into conference play next weekend."
Game OneIn his first start of the season,
Jacob Beauchamp earned the win behind an 11-strikeout performance. The senior lefthander threw eight and two thirds innings and carried the shutout into the final frame.
Cameron Crawford led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Tomita. A single through the right side of the infield by
Connor Hoover plated Crawford for the game's first run.
An inning later,
Trevor Sams' sacrifice fly scored
Bo Edwards for the Nighthawks' second run.
Indianapolis' Daniel Lee provided the Greyhounds' lone run with a solo homerun in the top of the ninth, breaking up Beauchamp's shutout.
Phillip Taylor earned his first save of the season after retiring the final batter with a harmless ground out back to the mound.
UNG's
Kevin Krupp was the game's only player to collect multiple hits as he was 2-3 with a double.
Connor Mailloux was saddled with the loss for Indianapolis despite allowing just a pair of earned runs against five strikeouts.
Game TwoA four-run fourth inning was all the offense that North Georgia would need in the second game.
Blake Gaubert (1-0) earned the win on the hill, pitching five scoreless innings while scattering three hits.
Taylor Keinat added three innings of solid relief work with four strikeouts.
Single runs in the sixth and seventh innings would cap the scoring for the Nighthawks.
A pair of outfield assists gunned down an IU scoring threat in the top of the fifth.
Tremayne Toorie and
Bo Edwards each threw out runners at the plate to protect the Nighthawk lead.
Hoover and
Sam Tidaback led the UNG offense as both recorded a pair of hits apiece. Tidaback scored twice and tallied his first homerun of the year in the sixth.
Next UpNorth Georgia (4-4) returns to the diamond on Saturday (Feb. 21) with the team's Peach Belt Conference opening series against Georgia Southwestern. The three-game tilt begins with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
