MORROW, Ga. | Paced by four starters in double figures, the University of North Georgia women's basketball team moved to 8-1 on the year with an 86-76 win over Virginia Union on the final day of the Heritage Bank Classic hosted by Clayton State.
Kelsey Hutchins led the Nighthawks with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds while
Cierra Jackson added 18 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.
Molly Rainwater added 16 points on five-of-eight shooting from behind the three-point line while
Stephanie Huffman added 13 points and seven assists.
Ashle Freeman paced Virginia Union (3-4) with a game-high 24 points.
Jackson and Rainwater combined to shoot nine-of-13 from downtown as the team connected on a double figure (10) three-pointers for second time this year. Â
UNG led by 15 (48-33) at the break, but VU was able to fight back to just a six point deficit (66-60) with just under seven minutes remaining but North Georgia then used an 11-1 run to close the game out.
North Georgia was the only team to win both games in the four-team classic-style event.
The Nighthawks will now take a 12-day break before returning to action on December 18 in the team's Peach Belt Conference opener at Flagler.
