How Jones got to UNG
Standout freshman Averie Jones did not have to travel far to find her new home for her college years. The Dahlonega, Ga. native graduated Lumpkin County High School last year and elected to stay in her hometown and join the prestigious UNG women's basketball program. Jones joined former LCHS teammates Lexi Pierce and Isabel Davenport when she signed to play with the Nighthawks. At LCHS, Jones learned how to win and did so in impressive fashion. As a freshman, she helped her team to a Final Four appearance. They won a State Championship the next year before being the State Champion Runner-Up in Jones' junior season in 2023. She ended her career as the all-time leading scorer in Lumpkin County High School girls basketball history with over 1,500 career points. She was honored with a selection to the Blitz Hall of Fame and was also named 3A First Team All-State. Jones said, "Dahlonega is my home and I have grown up watching North Georgia. I have always loved the culture that the team displays and it has always been something I wanted to be apart of. I am very thankful to Coach Burson for giving me the opportunity to play in my hometown once again and share the game I love with my community."
