Box Score 2 ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The No. 14 University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball team powered its way to a doubleheader sweep of Claflin on Saturday, posting a pair of high-scoring victories to cap the series in dominant fashion.
The Nighthawks erupted for 40 runs across the two games, taking the opener 20-2 before securing the sweep with a 20-4 win in the nightcap.
Game 1: North Georgia 20, Claflin 2
North Georgia wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, scoring four runs in the first inning and breaking the game open with a six-run third on the way to a 20-2 victory.
The Nighthawks plated four runs in the opening frame, highlighted by RBI efforts from
Brody Yeomans,
Jake Prince and
Jake Streeter. After Claflin trimmed the deficit to 4-2 through two innings, North Georgia responded with a barrage of home runs in the third.
Yeomans launched a two-run homer to right-center to begin the surge before Streeter followed with a two-run shot to left.
Brady Skipper then added a solo homer later in the inning as the Nighthawks scored six runs to stretch the lead to 10-2.
North Georgia continued to add on with three runs in the fourth, six in the fifth and another in the sixth to close out the run-rule victory.
Skipper led the offensive attack, going 4-for-6 with four RBI and two home runs. Yeomans finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while
Kyle Robitzsch went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Streeter also collected three hits and drove in three runs.
Kevin Cox (4-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits over four innings while striking out two.
Chandler Thiel was dominant in relief, tossing three scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
Game 2: North Georgia 20, Claflin 4
The Nighthawks carried their offensive momentum into game two, scoring five runs in the first inning and pulling away late for a 20-4 victory to finish the sweep.
Cam Hodge started the scoring with a two-run single before
Schley Gordy added an RBI triple.
Zach Aschoff capped the inning with a two-run single to give North Georgia an early 5-0 advantage.
Claflin answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and another in the third to make it 6-4, but the Nighthawks quickly regained control.
North Georgia erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run double from
Caleb Farr and an RBI double from Robitzsch. The Nighthawks added five more runs in the fifth, including a two-run homer from Yeomans, before pushing the final run across in the sixth.
Hodge finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Gordy went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a home run. Aschoff also drove in three runs as part of a 3-for-4 performance.
Andrew Duval (4-0) picked up the win after striking out eight over five innings while allowing four runs.
Ryan Taylor and
Ethan Finch combined for two scoreless innings in relief.
North Georgia returns to action March 10 at home against Auburn Montgomery at Bob Stein Stadium.
