DAHLONEGA - University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis player Olesya Stokusova has been named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week after leading the Nighthawks to a perfect 3-0 week at the Scenic City Spring Break Showcase.
Stokusova played a key role in three UNG victories against nationally ranked opponents, helping the Nighthawks secure wins over No. 20 Lee, No. 26 Indianapolis and No. 24 UT Tyler.
Against No. 20 Lee, the No. 29-ranked Stokusova earned a straight-sets victory over No. 52 Aliyah Dwyer, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles as North Georgia rolled to a 6-1 team win.
She followed that performance with another strong outing against No. 26 Indianapolis. Stokusova teamed with Anastasiia Opolska for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles before defeating No. 73 Magda Kornijczuk, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles to help lift UNG to a 4-1 victory.
In the Nighthawks' 4-1 win over No. 24 UT Tyler, Stokusova's singles match went unfinished, but she held a commanding 6-1, 5-4 lead at No. 3 when play was halted.
With the week's performances, Stokusova improved to 9-0 in singles competition this season.
North Georgia returns to action March 18, opening Peach Belt Conference play against Augusta at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
