Last Second Free Throws Lift Nighthawks Past Georgia College, 80-79

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - With .2 seconds remaining, Colin Turner stepped to the line and delivered a pair of free throws that pushed the University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball team past Georgia College, 80-79, on Wednesday night in GCSU's Centennial Center. The late sequence capped a frantic final few seconds that carried postseason implications in the Peach Belt Conference standings and saw North Georgia claw back from a pair of two-possession deficits with less than 15 seconds remaining capped by making four free throws with less than a second left to play.

Georgia College struck first, using an 11-0 run to build a 15-5 lead six and a half minutes into the game. North Georgia answered with a 10-2 surge to trim the deficit to two midway through the first half, but the Bobcats stretched the margin back to eight, 28-20, with 5:09 remaining.

The Nighthawks closed the half on a 13-3 run, including six points from Zack Hawkinson, to take a 33-31 lead into the break.

North Georgia opened the second half with a 7-0 run to extend the advantage to nine. Georgia College responded with a 17-0 run to reclaim control and build an eight-point lead at the midpoint of the half.

From there, the Nighthawks chipped away. North Georgia began fouling in the closing seconds to preserve time, and the Bobcats split a pair at the line with eight seconds left to move ahead 77-73.

AJ White drilled a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to pull North Georgia within one at 77-76. After a quick foul, Georgia College converted both free throws to make it 79-76.

With .6 seconds left, White was fouled on a 3-point attempt and awarded three free throws. He made the first, missed the second and converted the third to cut the deficit to 79-78.

Following a review to confirm the clock, Turner was fouled with .2 seconds remaining after intercepting the GCSU inbounds pass near midcourt. He made both attempts, giving North Georgia its first lead since the 11:40 mark of the second half and sealing the 80-79 victory.

White finished with 32 points to lead the Nighthawks (17-6, 11-6 PBC), who extended their winning streak to six games. C.J. Jones paced Georgia College (15-10, 10-7 PBC) with 16 points and six assists.

With the win, North Georgia remained in fourth place in the Peach Belt standings, staying ahead of Georgia College in the race for postseason positioning.

The Nighthawks return to action Feb. 21 when they host Flagler at Lynn Cottrell Arena inside the UNG Convocation Center for Homecoming.
