WEST POINT, N.Y. – The University of North Georgia (UNG) rifle team set a new program record in smallbore and aggregate while pushing Army to the wire, falling 4,683-4,679 Saturday in a head-to-head competition at West Point.
The Nighthawks posted a school-best 2,320 in smallbore, surpassing the previous mark and keeping the match tight despite Army holding a narrow edge in that discipline, 2,337-2,320. North Georgia answered with a strong showing in air rifle, beating Army for the first time in program history, winning that segment 2,359-2,346, but ultimately came up four points short in the aggregate.
Corbin Jockers led UNG overall, finishing third individually with an aggregate score of 1,173, totaling 584 in smallbore and 589 in air rifle. Brianna Walter followed closely with an aggregate score of 1,171, highlighted by a personal-record 584 in smallbore to go along with a 587 in air rifle.
In smallbore, Jockers paced the Nighthawks with his 584, while Walter matched that score as part of the record-setting effort. Ian Lyons added 579, and Maya Cameron contributed 573 to round out the scoring toward the team total.
Air rifle proved to be North Georgia's strongest discipline, led by Abby Swain's personal record and team-high 596, including 51 centers. Jockers followed with a 589, while Walter and Alison Sutherlin each posted 587. Courtney Allison also factored into the scoring with a 584.
North Georgia continues its season Sunday, Jan. 18, against John Jay in West Point, N.Y.
