DAHLONEGA -- The University of North Georgia (UNG) men's soccer team had a pair of players earn weekly awards from the Peach Belt Conference Monday afternoon. Senior forward
Santiago Cano was named the PBC Player of the Week while senior defender
DJ Shin earned the title of PBC Defender of the Week.
Cano found the goal twice and added an assist in UNG's two games last week.
At home against No. 4 Anderson, Cano scored in the 72nd minute of a 2-2 draw. He then found the back of the net and had an assist in the team's historic 6-0 win at home over USC Aiken on Saturday.
Cano leads the team with 4 goals this season. Monday marked the first time in his career the Valencia, Venezuela native was named Player of the Week
Shin had one of the most impressive goals of the year in the 2nd minute against USC Aiken on Saturday as he opened the scoring with a laser from 40 yards out. It was Shin's first goal in a Nighthawk uniform as UNG went on to win the game 6-0, moving into a tie for first place in the conference.
This is the second Defender of the Week award Shin has earned in his career and his first of the season.Â
UNG has now had two players earn the Player and Defender of the Week honors in the same week twice this season. That feat had previously not happened since Sept. 9, 2008 before this season.Â
Cano, Shin and the rest of the Nighthawks are back in action this week on the road. On Wednesday, Oct. 1 the team will face two-time reigning PBC regular-season Champion Clayton State in Morrow, Ga. at 5 p.m.
