ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 3 University of North Georgia women's tennis program has arrived at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. for the 2024 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships.
In the Round of 16, the Nighthawks will face No. 33 Charleston for their first match in the Sunshine State.
UNG enters the contest with a program best 23-1 record thus far this season. The Golden Eagles have made the trip to Altamonte Springs with a strong 18-4 record this year. While this will be the first ever matchup between the two teams, Charleston has faced a number of common opponents with UNG this year.
Back on Feb. 14, the Golden Eagles defeated Carson-Newman 4-1 in a quick early-season victory. The Nighthawks took down Carson-Newman 6-1 just seven days prior to Charleston's matchup.
On Feb. 21, UNG faced Tusculum and defeated the Pioneers in a calm, 7-0 victory. Just three days later, Charleston took down Tusculum as well, but in a closer fashion. The Golden Eagles needed back-to-back wins in the #4 and #5 singles matches to defeat the Pioneers 4-3.
A few days later, Charleston fell 1-6 to Peach Belt Conference member Flagler. The Nighthawks went 2-0 against Flagler this year, including a 5-2 win in the PBC Tournament Championship to secure the program's first ever conference tournament title.
Now, the Nighthawks are back at the National Championships looking to make more history. Should they defeat Charleston, it will be UNG's second appearance ever in the Round of 8 of the NCAA Tournament. It will also be their first such appearance in five seasons.
