DAHLONEGA – A tough battle ended with the No. 9 University of North Georgia women's tennis team falling 4-1 against No. 18 Columbus State in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division II South Regional #2 at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park.
CSU will join No. 4 Flagler as the two teams to represent the Southeast region at the 2023 NCAA Division II Tennis Championships at the USTA National Campus (Collegiate Center) in Orlando, Florida on May 11-16.
A tough doubles point loss put North Georgia at an early 1-0 deficit, with
Valentina Ascarrunz and
Ashley Moinard earning a win in the #3 flight, but a 6-1 loss in the #2 flight and a tiebreaker loss in the #1 flight put the Nighthawks down 1-0.
In singles, all but one of the flights went into a third set as both teams battled throughout.
Svetlana Teterina got North Georgia on the board with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory in the #6 flight, but CSU pulled out three wins in the singles matches to advance past UNG 4-1.
The Nighthawks end the season at 16-7, making their third straight appearance in the Round of 32 and winning the program's ninth NCAA Tournament match in its six straight appearances. The 2022-23 campaign is highlighted by their third-place finish at the ITA Indoor Nationals and their seven wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
