PEMBROKE, N.C. - The No. 21 University of North Georgia baseball team scored the final four runs of the game, but it wasn't enough as the NIghthawk comeback fell short in the ninth in an 11-9 loss to UNC Pembroke Sunday afternoon.
After the Braves scored a pair of runs to kick things off in the third, North Georgia tied the game in the top of the fourth with a run off a fielder's choice followed by a
Jake Arnold sacrifice fly. UNCP plated the next six runs in the bottom of the fourth, all being unearned runs. The half inning was highlighted by a grand slam for the Braves.
The Nighthawks trimmed the lead down to three in the sixth, using a
Will Hardigree RBI single and an Arnold two-run blast to cut the lead to 8-5. After UNCP got back the three runs in the bottom of the frame, UNG started the comeback effort in the seventh with a Howard sacrifice fly. The Nighthawks scored on a
Crews Taylor solo homer in the eighth and a two-RBI double from
Tim Conway in the ninth, but UNCP got the final outs to escape with the sweep and the PBC regular season title.
NOTES
- North Georgia left 13 runners on base in the game, including two or more in an inning four times.
- Conway led the Nighthawks at the plate with a 3-for-5 day, drawing a walk as well.
