MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 24 University of North Georgia baseball team earned a split of Saturday's doubleheader at No. 8 Georgia College, falling in seven innings in game one before a 12-3 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE - GC 16, #24 UNG 6 (7 inn.)
North Georgia struck first as
Andres Perez hit a two run bomb in the top of the first to put UNG out in front. Georgia College, however, answered with a five-run first, scoring on a bases clearing double, a RBI single and a passed ball.
Tim Conway trimmed the lead to two in the third on a RBI single to right field, but the Bobcats put up another big number in the bottom of the frame, bringing in six to push their lead to 11-3.
After Bobcat homers in the fourth and fifth made the score 14-3, the Nighthawks got two runs back in the sixth on a pair of sacrifice flies. Georgia College got a solo homer in the sixth to get to the 10-run advantage. In the seventh, Perez had a sacrifice fly to extend the game into the bottom of the frame, but the Bobcats pushed a run across on a bases loaded single to end the game.
GAME TWO - #24 UNG 12, GC 3
After the first three and a half innings went by with no runs on the scoreboard, it was Georgia College who pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth to strike first on a pair of RBI singles. North Georgia answered with four in the top of the fifth on a trio of RBI doubles by
Nik Levensteins,
Will Hardigree and
Crews Taylor to put UNG up, 4-2.
The Bobcats scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI groundout before North Georgia blew the game open in the sixth. The Nighthawks got things started with another Levensteins RBI double before Hardigree stepped up and cleared the bases on a RBI single to center. Three batters later, Conway blasted a three-run shot to cap off a seven run inning that gave UNG an 11-3 lead. Taylor homered in the eighth to push the game to its final score.
Eddie Galatas (1-1) got the win for the Nighthawks, going four innings in relief and fanning 10 Bobcats.
Pierce Williams started the game and went four strong innings while
Maddex Richardson threw the fifth inning of the game.
NOTES
- In the two games combined, North Georgia left just six runners on base.
- Levensteins was the leading hitter on the day, going 2-for-6 with four RBI.
