DAHLONEGA - The No. 7 University of North Georgia softball team went 2-0 on the opening day of the Captain D's Surf 'n Turf Classic Saturday at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Cottrell Park.
GAME ONE - UNG 6, TAMUK 1
Texas A&M - Kingsville got on the board first, using a leadoff triple and single to push a run across in the top fo the first. North Georgia answered in the bottom of the frame to tie it up on a
Kaylee Womack bomb to center field.
From there, it was all Nighthawks as UNG scored two in the third on a
Madison Simmons RBI double, one in the fourth on a
Lexi Duncan RBI single and two in the fifth. The first in the fifth came off a Javelina error before
Shelby Hammontree hit a sacrifice fly to push the final run across.
Kylee Smith (11-2) earned the win, fanning seven.
GAME TWO - UNG 7, UWP 2
The Nighthawks scored in the top half of the first inning on a Simmons RBI single, but the Rangers answered in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs to take a 2-1 lead over the No. 7 team in the nation.
UNG answered quickly, extinguishing any momentum that Wisconsin Parkside had with a
Kaylyn Anthony RBI single that tied the game shortly before an
Olivia Sinquefield RBI groundout that gave the Nighthawks the lead.
North Georgia plated three more in the fifth, highlighted by a
Hannah Forehand RBI double, before scoring the final run in the sixth on an Anthony RBI groundout.
Abbie Crawford (4-1) earned the win, going 6.2 innings of shutout softball, sitting down seven via strikeout.
NOTES
- TAMUK defeated Wisconsin Parkside in the second game of the day, 14-6, in six innings.
- Anthony finished the day 4-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI.
