DAHLONEGA - The No. 16 University of North Georgia softball team split a Sunday doubleheader at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Cottrell Park, defeating McKendree, 14-1, before falling in a pitcher's duel to Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0.
GAME 1
The Nighthawks got things rolling in the third inning when
Shelby Hammontree singled to plate
Kaylyn Anthony. The Bearcats answered in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game up before UNG retook the lead for good on a
Lexi Duncan RBI single.
From there, the offense exploded, scoring two in the fifth, three in the sixth and seven in the seventh.
Abbie Crawford came on in relief to earn her second win of the season, striking out seven across 3.1 innings.
GAME 2
A battle of wills was won by the Bears in the seventh inning, but UNG had an excellent opportunity to plate a run in the sixth, loading up the bases with two outs. L-R was able to get out of the jam and took advantage in the next frame with a RBI double that proved the difference.
Kylee Smith (2-1) took the loss but struck out a season-high 15 batters with the run being an unearned run.
