CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Adrienne Bofinger fought from a set down to win the deciding line as the No. 10 University of North Georgia women's tennis team took a 4-3 win over No. 22 Queens Sunday evening.
The Royals took the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles, despite the Nighthawks clinching the match on the third line with Bofinger and
Anna Marie Moller earning a 6-3 win.
Vaishali Jorge and
Anna Markvartova took the No. 1 doubles duo in the southeast to the limit before falling 7-5 on the top line.
The singles matches were just as tight. Jorge got UNG on the board with a decisive 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2, but Queens retook the lead with a win at No. 3. Claudelle Labonte Frey tied the match up again with her straight set win at No. 5, but again the Royals answered with a win, this time at No. 4.
Needing to win the final two matches, Rafaella Villanueva got the tying point with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 6, setting up the deciding match on the top singles line. Bofinger won the first set, 7-5, but fell in the second set on a tiebreak. The junior was not phased by the second set defeat, bouncing back to win the match with a 6-4 third set.
The Nighthawks will hit the road again on Wednesday for a match at Belmont Abbey. First serves fly at 2 p.m.
