MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Kylee Smith tossed a one-hitter and
Madison Simmons hit two homers as the No. 12 University of North Georgia softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep over Barry Thursday night.
GAME ONE - UNG 2, BU 0
The Bucs got their only hit of the game in the bottom of the first when the leadoff hitter legged out an infield single. From that point, Smith shut down the Barry bats, fanning 15 batters and retiring the next 21 straight.
UNG finally got on the board with a solo shot by
Madison Simmons in the fifth inning. The Nighthawks were able to double their lead in the sixth on a pair of Barry errors.
GAME TWO - UNG 5, BU 0
It was
Margaret Simmons who got things started on the scoreboard for the Nighthawks in the fourth inning of the nightcap, doubling to right center to score
Shelby Hammontree and give the Nighthawks the lead.
Madison Simmons was the next batter and she cleared the bases with a three run bomb to give UNG a 4-0 lead.
Hannah Forehand brought home the game's final run in the sixth off a RBI double that plated
Olivia Sinquefield.
Laken Chambers (3-0) earned the win, tossing six innings of three hit softball, sitting down five via strikeout.
NOTES
- Both of
Madison Simmons's homers accounted for her two hits in the twinbill.
- For the second time in the past three games, Smith threw exactly 100 pitches. She is now 11 strikeouts away from 1,000 for her career.
